WELCOME TO THE SARPY AIKIDO CLUB, LLC

AIKIDO

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei).  Aikido is rooted in the Japanese Samurai warrior traditions and disarming techniques.  It also is influenced by Ueshiba's study of Daito-Ryu jujutsu.  Aikido replaced the maiming and destruction of classic jujutsu with control and compassion.  One translation of Aikido is "the way to harmony with ki."

HARMONY

On a purely physical level Aikido is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujutsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu.  Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

ENERGY

Increased stamina, flexibility, and muscle development occur naturally as a result of training, but the techniques themselves do not depend on strength for effectiveness.  Since Aikido's movements and techniques arise from the most efficient utilization of the entire being, great power can be developed by the practitioner, regardless of physical strength.  As a result, Aikdo can be practiced by men, women and children of all ages.

THE WAY

Sarpy Aikido Club was opened in mid of 1990, in its present location at LaVista Recreation Center in Omaha, Nebraska.  It was the first Aikido club to be opened in the Omaha area.  In 2009, the club was incorporated as Sarpy Aikido Club, LLC.  Ron Christenham Sensei, a 6th degree black belt, is the chief instructor of the dojo.  Sarpy Aikido Club, LLC is affiliated with Aikido Hawaii Internation, chaired by Robert Kubo Shihan of Hawaii.
